Create A Silver And Crystal Vanity Set For Your Bedroom Dresser

Almost every woman dreams of having a dresser top that sparkles in silver and crystal. Of course, the dresser itself is probably made of wood, but those two substances would make up the trays, perfume bottles, brushes and combs, trinket boxes, and pomades that were frequently seen on elegantly carved dressers more than half a century ago. Knowing what to look for, and what really appeals to you, is important in the assembling of such a set. Some finer department stores may carry complete sets, but it can be much more fun in building up your own. One of the reasons it is more fun to make your own is because it says something personal about you. For example, if you are out visiting antique malls and find a pomade holder with a carved silver top that is a bargain, that can definitely be something you will want to add to your set. Below are some of the primary items that make up a vanity set:

A small crystal jar with a lid. This is ideal for storing things like real pearls, potpourri, or brooches.

A crystal powder jar. These are usually squat and round, big enough to hold a powder puff and your loose facial powder.

A silver plated hand mirror, comb, and hairbrush set. Sometimes clothes brushes can also be found plated in silver. These would be used to remove lint from linens, sweaters, and any other fabric that attracted dust and pillballs.

A sterling silver tray for your perfumes. I actually have two different trays that I use, one for the perfumes, the other, for some necklaces.

A crystal or sterling silver ring holder. The one seen here is an example of what you may find in the marketplace. These are ideal for holding your good rings whenever you have to take them off to do the dishes, or shower.

Crystal or glass perfume refillable bottles. Go for your favorite glass color as a striking contrast to your vanity set. Czech glass perfume bottles are collectible and beautiful. I have a purple one in my collection.

A hairpin box. These look like small, rectangular boxes with lids jut to hold your hairpins. If you don't have any hairpins, try filling it with your best rhinestone barrettes. I've used an old Avon pomade holder made of glass but crystal cut, with a pretty silver plated lid, for my hairpins.

Now that you know what makes up a fairly complete vanity set, where do you start looking for pieces? Depending on your budget, you can start looking in thrift stores and flea markets for your pieces. The most common items you find in places like these are the ring holders, trays, and crystal or glass covered jars. Make sure the glass has no chips or cracks in it. When you get them home from the thrift store, use a mild soap to wash them, then let them dry naturally. For sterling silver items, simply use the special polish made just for cleaning and shining up this item. Use a dry sponge to apply the paste, rub into the silver, then wipe off with a soft, dry cloth. Once you have started your vanity set, you can arrange them on your dresser. For older, vintage items, make sure silver plated items have no obvious dark chips missing or corrosion. If anything has to be cleaned, use a soft bristled brush to remove dirt from any carved areas and use a mild soap, rinsing with lukewarm water.

Buy only what appeals to you. If you see something that appears to be practical but does not fit in with your scheme of how you want your vanity set to look, then pass on it.
